Guilt-Free Mocha Smoothie

With chia seeds and cocao nibs, this frozen coffee drink is not only tasty, but healthy too.


  • ¼ cup soaked chia seeds (replaces a frozen banana)

  • 1 cup plant-based milk, divided

  • Red Eye ice cubes

  • ¼ cup raw cacao powder

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • Cocoa nibs for garnish


  1. The night before: make a cup of coffee with a shot of espresso (a Red Eye), and pour the cooled coffee into an ice tray. Freeze overnight.

  2. In a small bowl, mix together ¼ cup chia seeds with ½ cup plant-based milk and leave in the fridge to plump overnight.

  3. In the morning, blend the ice cubes, soaked chia seeds, cacao powder, ½ cup milk and cinnamon in the blender until thick and smooth. Pour into two glasses and top with cacao nibs for crunch!

So we have some delicious coffee and espresso ice cubes that we froze overnight. We also soaked some chia seeds, so chia seeds have so many antioxidants, and We like to use this and replace of a banana. We just soak the chia seeds in a little bit of plant-based milk. We used flax milk for this, and it plumps up and it creates this really creamy banana-like consistency once it gets blended. I'm gonna add in my coffee and espresso ice cubes 'cause in the morning we could all use some of that, and I have my really creamy chia seeds, as you can see. They really, really plump up, and that's just gonna go into the blender, too. And before We add any of  powdered things, lets add liquid so that that stuff doesn't get stuck to the bottom. So this is just flax milk, and we're pouring that over ice cubes. Delicious. And we have a quarter cup of raw cacao powder, and that's just gonna go in, 'cause you can't have a chocolate smoothie without cocoa. All right, now our last ingredient is cinnamon, because this doesn't have any extra sugar added to this because we didn't add in a banana, the cinnamon is actually going to tone down the bitterness and really add this natural sweetness, and it just goes really well with the chocolate, so we're gonna blend this on high. Beautiful. All right, so we're gonna pop the lid off that and serve it up. We have these really cute stripey straws and some mason jars. Yum. Perfect. We can smell that coffee. It just smells like the morning. And we're gonna top this with a little bit of cocoa nibs for crunch. We love cocoa nibs.. don't you?. Mm, this is the perfect solution for your 3:00 slump. This smoothie is so chocolatey and it has just the right amount of caffeine and sweetness. We don't feel guilty about drinking it in the middle of the afternoon. You have to try it.
